The Illusionist poster As part of this year’s Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, BFS is pleased to present the newly released animation film The Illusionist (PG). The unproduced script for this clever cinematic creation, penned in the 1950s by the inimitable Jacques Tati, lay dormant in his family’s attic – until now. Charged with bringing it to life, French director and lauded cartoonist Sylvain Chomet (Belleville Rendezvous) adapted the script and along with his vast international team of animators, dedicated five hard years to hand-drawing the story. The result is a classically-conceived, tender homage to things which must inevitably move on, in this case, old-style magic; it is also a tribute to lovable Tati himself, set in beautifully-depicted Edinburgh (where Chomet’s studio was located) and mirroring the touching relationship between the real Jacques Tati and his daughter Sophie, on whom the two main caricatures are based.

Our Film Seasons run from September through to May. Films are screened once a month on the last Wednesday of each month during the Season (unless otherwise noted e.g. at Christmas).

This time we’ve added in two EXTRA SCREENINGS between our regular end-of-the-month filmshows, which take us into more challenging territory. Each of our hand-picked (and always previewed) film choices invites discussion and we encourage you to stay on afterwards to chat with us and each other about what you’ve just watched. All our screenings take place in The Maltings Theatre, Eastern Lane, Berwick, where you can relax in comfort, enjoy the big screen experience, relish the theatrical auditorium, and bring your drinks in to the film from the characterful Stage Door bar!
